George reported the same problem with MATLAB 7.1 also. I don't know what has changed since 4.2.4; my guess is that it rather comes from the building tools than from Dynare itself.
Note that I routinely test against 7.0, but not 7.1.
The difficulty is that I don't have that specific version installed in my virtual machine, and I am not sure I can install it either via a DVD or a website download. I'll have a look.
In my opinion we could raise the requirement for MATLAB, since 7.1 is quite old. People who cannot afford an upgrade could use Octave. Maintaining compatibility with many MATLAB versions has a cost, so we must weight the benefits.
